The City has issued a Notice to Proceed to the company that has been contracted to relocate the base of the lighthouse from Round Island to the mainland. However, both the City and the contractor are waiting to see the ultimate outcome of the oil spill before beginning the relocation process, as first phase of the relocation will involve a few weeks of work on the island to dig out the lighthouse and move it to the barge.

More updates will follow as the process moves forward.
The St. George's Light, built during the same period as the Round Island Lighthouse, suffered a similar fate when on Friday, October 21, 2005, the Cape St. George Light collapsed into the Gulf of Mexico. Built in 1852 on what is now Little St. George Island, the Light finally succumbed to beach erosion and pounding waves. Working with state and federal government support, the St. George Lighthouse Association spearheaded the effort to salvage the pieces of the Light. Volunteers cleaned the mortar off thousands of the old bricks. The original plans were obtained from the National Archives in Washington, D.C. and the lighthouse was reconstructed on St. George Island, using as much of the original materials as possible. On Monday, December 1, 2008, the reconstructed lighthouse was opened to the public.
